Schedule Un-attended full system saves with SAV/400
What should you backup?
Disaster recovery firms will state; "anything less then
a full system save is a compromise that makes recovery a more
complex and less certain process".
Compromise is almost inevitable in today's world. As
"on-line days" are extended backup windows not only
shrink, but they are also re-scheduled to more and more anti-social
times.
If you have remote locations, full system saves become even
more difficult, requiring skilled staff to travel long distances to
complete full system saves often out-side of normal working hours
and at a cost not only in financial terms, but also in technical
resource.
When should you backup?
Regular full system saves should be completed as a matter of
policy and before any major system changes such as engineering work,
or PTF installations.
Difficulties
Full system saves require that a member of staff has to be
there to enter commands and wait for the save to complete. On some
of the larger systems this can take several hours. This is where
SAV/400 can help.
SAV/400
SAV/400 allows you to run and schedule commands, programs and
SAV backup options directly from the console without a member of
staff being in attendance.
The product has a complete set of backup menu options ranging
from a full system save to any subset of a full save including a
customisable list of libraries, and the flexibility to schedule and
run any program from the console.
This capability is extremely useful for those customers who
have a specific shut down procedure or those that regularly run
reclaim storage.
The standard menu options have been designed to provide you
with all the relevant parameters you will need to complete your full
system saves, for example:
- Run commands in a restricted state
- Restart sub-systems after backup
- Initialise tapes
- Tape drive use
- Time and date
Using these parameters SAV will end the system to a
restricted state complete the backup task and bring the system back
up ready for use.
Set-up
This is a straightforward product to set-up. Once you receive
the software you are five steps away from running your first
restricted state task.
- Restore the library
- Run the set-up program
- Install the license key
- Sign-on to the console
- Schedule a backup
There are sophisticated functions included in the package
that allow you to create your own list of libraries to backup or use
a customised message reply list, these options remain
straightforward to configure, set-up and use.
Reliability
We have spent many hours testing and researching potential
problems. We realise that, especially with remote sites, the system
must not remain in a restricted state unless the customer has
requested it through one of the menu options. As a default the
system start-up program is called whenever a message is received
that the software cannot handle.
Benefits
With SAV/400, full system saves can be completed at your
convenience as often as your backup window or your tape drive
capacity will allow. Ensuring that in the event of a disaster being
declared - you are in the best position to recover your system
quickly and effectively.
