Background
Jane Shilton Plc is a luxury branded supplier of handbags, shoes and luggage
with outlets in most major department stores in the United Kingdom. Jane
Shilton Plc had been requested by a major trading partner to conform to
pure cross dock.
Pure Cross Dock bring benefits to both Jane Shilton Plc and it's trading
partners as increased efficiencies within the supply chain, which results
in a reduction in the supply chain cycle and merchandise reaching the sales
floor faster. This in turn results in better replenishment and increased
sales.
Unfortunately for Jane Shilton Plc there was no way to implement Pure Cross
Dock within it's existing AS400 systems and procedures.
Cross Dock
In its purest form cross-docking is the action of unloading materials from
an incoming trailer or rail car and immediately loading these materials
in outbound trailers or rail cars thus eliminating the need for warehousing
(storage).
The solution
KDP Software Ltd has a long standing relationship with Jane Shilton Plc
as their major AS400 software supplier. Jane Shilton Plc turned to KDP to find
a solution to their problem. With previous knowledge of existing AS400 systems,
KDP Software could give Jane Shilton Plc a workable, inexpensive solution
using the latest technology and being an authorised Symbol re-seller, deliver the entire solution.
Using Symbol SPT1740 wireless Hand-held scanners running a Java picking
program, one touch of the scanners touch sensitive screen can allocate
the next order on a picking queue from data held remotely in a iSeries DB2 database. Warehouse staff can then scan as they pick into
predefined containers on a predetermined route.
Items can only be scanned in the sequence of the route and only scan to
the quantities requested for a particular item on the order. All data is
constantly synchronized with the iSeries DB2 database by using a Java server running on the iSeries communicating over the wireless network with the scanner. When
every item on queue is complete, all items, containers and quantity details
are added to the advanced shipping note (ASN) and an electronic and hard
copy invoice produced. All these details are then automatically interfaced
with Sales and Nominal Ledgers and Sales Analysis on the AS400 Chorus accounting system.
At the end of day the orders are dispatched and the electronic ASN and
invoice are sent to the trading partners. All orders now raised at Jane
Shilton will be processed through the new system. Eventually Jane Shilton
will be able to fulfill 100% of all orders from receipt to picking, through
invoicing and finally dispatch without any manually keying of data whatsoever
and can be truly sure that what they dispatch to the customer is what the
customer ordered.
